This is a great post by William Powhida. I couldn't say it better myself, even though I have weighed in on this subject before. Below is an exerpt from his 20 x 200 post.

"When I was in Miami during Art Basel last December, I conducted an interview with New York Times journalist Damien Cave who repeatedly asked, "What's the alternative to the art market?" The question is not an easy one to answer.

Short of radical social and economic reform, which seems incredibly unlikely in our pro-Capitalist, market-trusting society I struggled to articulate my thoughts surrounded by the spectacle of Basel. While I was down there, I also saw Jen Bekman's booth at Pulse and it reminded me that one of my answers to Mr. Cave should have immediately been "access." Access to contemporary art is often restricted by high prices, including my own, that put it out of reach of the majority of people who love art. 20x200 offers a way to make art and the experience of buying art accessible to the broader public than the limited pool of collectors who have the means to buy unique and often wildly expensive art objects. Art, in many ways, is a luxury commodity and the larger question remains, 'what is enough?'"

This year, twenty different artists are participating in this month-long exhibition on Medicine Lake, just west of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Art Shanty Projects is open on the southeast corner of Medicine Lake from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm on weekends from January 16 until February 7.

Below is a photo set from the opening day of the project. The artists are very interested in talking about their work and many are already looking forward to next year. If you can handle the cold, this is a interesting and fun exhibit that you can only see in a place like Minnesota.

A few years ago I was looking for an athletic hat that I could wear in cold weather while I ran outside during Minnesota winters. Many hats I tried were too thick to be useful. The problem with thick hats in cold weather is that they can cause you to sweat a lot more than usual and a wet head in cold temperatures can be dangerous. I wanted a cheap alternative that would keep my head warm, yet breaths enough to be comfortable on a winter run.

The sleeves of common cotton t-shirts typically fit snugly over the head (provided your head and arms are proportionate to each other). The cotton material can keep your ears and head warm, but still breath enough so that your head does not overheat. Any old t-shirt that still has a little life in the sleeves will do. Just cut off the sleeve at the seam, sew up the end you just cut away with a sewing machine or needle and thread, and turn the sleeve inside out to hide the seam you created. Your hat is done, and it didn't cost a dime.

This is one of the first print ads I have done for my business in years. While I have done hundreds of ads over the past few years for a number of clients, I rarely design or run my own ads. Alas, any opportunity to get a little more visibility cannot be a bad thing, especially in this economy. This half page ad is destined for a few different publications around the Twin Cities metro in the coming months.
